AI for Service Businesses: What Changed in July 2026

New survey data showed what still wins the call after an AI search, Google showed owners which searches reach their social posts, and Gemini Spark learned to work in customers' accounts.

July's clearest signal for service businesses was new data: BrightLocal found that among consumers already using AI to find a local business, only 18% felt ready to contact the business an AI tool recommended, and the rest kept checking Google and other channels first (BrightLocal, 2026). Google also gave owners a new Search Console report and gave its Gemini Spark agent access to customers' logged-in accounts (Google Search Central Blog, 2026; Google, 2026).

Customers use AI to shortlist, then check Google

BrightLocal published two parts of its consumer search behavior study on July 9 and July 15, based on a representative panel of 1,227 US consumers who had searched for a local business in the past three months (BrightLocal, 2026; BrightLocal, 2026). In their most recent search, 23% used an AI tool, 52% started on Google Search, 71% used Google Search at some point, and 73% started on a phone (BrightLocal, 2026). Among consumers already using AI for local searches, only 18% felt ready to contact the business an AI tool recommended; the rest kept checking Google and other channels, and 43% of people who started on an AI tool went on to Google (BrightLocal, 2026).

The second release showed what decides the call. During their latest search, 52% looked at a business and decided not to contact it, most often because of negative reviews (33%), unclear pricing or no offers (32%), or a low star rating (30%) (BrightLocal, 2026). Clear and complete information (hours, address, phone) was the most common top-three reason for choosing a business, at 32%, and 22% named a quick response to their first enquiry (BrightLocal, 2026).

Our read: AI can put you on the shortlist, but your profile, your reviews, and how fast you reply decide who gets hired. Our guide to how customers find local businesses through AI search covers the fixes.

Google now shows which searches lead to your social posts

On July 7, Google's Search Central blog introduced platform properties in Search Console, which show the search terms that lead people to your Instagram, TikTok, X, and YouTube content on Google Search, with clicks, impressions, and which posts and queries drive the most traffic (Google Search Central Blog, 2026). Google said the feature becomes available gradually over the coming weeks (Google Search Central Blog, 2026).

BrightLocal found 30% of consumers used social media during their most recent local search (BrightLocal, 2026). Our read: if you post job photos or before-and-after videos, this is a free way to see whether Google sends people to them, and for which searches.

Gemini Spark can now act inside a customer's own accounts

On July 30, Google said its Gemini Spark agent now works inside Chrome and, with the user's permission, can use their logged-in accounts and saved passwords to handle web errands, such as scheduling viewings for apartments they've saved or starting a booking (Google, 2026). Google said Spark hands sensitive steps like payments back to the user, and that the feature is rolling out first in the U.S. (Google, 2026).

This is a customer-side tool, so there's nothing for you to switch on. Our read: an agent working through your website can only finish what your website lets it finish. A working booking or quote form gives it a path; a site with only a phone number sends the customer back to the phone, and a missed call can cost you the job either way.

What to do this week

  1. Ask ChatGPT and Google for your main service plus your city. Note whether you're named and whether your hours, services, and phone number are right, since most AI users check those details before they call (BrightLocal, 2026).
  2. Fill every gap in your Google Business Profile (hours including holidays, services, service area, photos) and add a price range or a quote button to your top service page. Complete information and clear pricing were two of the top reasons people chose a business (BrightLocal, 2026).
  3. Ask your last 10 customers for a review and reply to every new one. Our Google reviews guide covers how, and the reviews ROI calculator puts a dollar figure on it.
  4. Test your own front door: call your main number after hours and submit your website form, then time the reply. Our speed to lead guide explains why minutes matter.
  5. If you post on Instagram, TikTok, X, or YouTube, add the account as a platform property in Search Console and check which searches lead to it (Google Search Central Blog, 2026).
