AI for Service Businesses: What Changed in April 2026

Three April changes that touch how customers reach you and how your leads get counted, plus what to check this week.

Data center corridor of server racks lit in gold

April's biggest change was easy to miss: Google Ads introduced AI-qualified call leads, letting its AI decide which ad calls count as leads, and its help page says call recording is now on by default (Google Ads Help, 2026). Yelp turned its app into an assistant that can start a booking or quote for the customer (Yelp, 2026), and new data showed how many home service inquiries still go unanswered (Pied Piper Management Company, 2026).

Google introduced AI-qualified call leads in a Google Ads Help page that PPC Land reports was dated April 21, 2026 (PPC Land, 2026; Google Ads Help, 2026). Google's AI now evaluates recorded ad calls for intent, such as a caller asking about specific services or scheduling a consultation, and when recording is on, only qualified calls count as conversions (Google Ads Help, 2026). Google's help page says recording is now on by default, except for accounts that had turned it off and businesses Google identified as healthcare or financial services (Google Ads Help, 2026).

It only applies to calls through a Google forwarding number, with both numbers in the US or Canada, and calls from location assets aren't recorded yet (Google Ads Help, 2026). Callers hear a short automated notice that the call is recorded, and by using the feature you acknowledge you've told your own staff (Google Ads Help, 2026).

What it means for you: Google says it now filters out robocalls, spam, and misdials that used to pass the call length test, and feeds the cleaner data to Smart Bidding (Google Ads Help, 2026). Our read: your call conversion numbers may drop while your real leads stay the same, and how your team handles each call now shapes what Google counts. The new AI call summaries and tags such as "#HighIntent" in Call Details are a quick way to hear how calls go (Google Ads Help, 2026).

Yelp's assistant now starts quotes and bookings for the customer

On April 21, 2026, Yelp announced more than 35 updates in its Spring Product Release, led by a new Yelp Assistant (Yelp, 2026). A customer describes what they need, and the assistant can initiate a reservation, start a quote request, or begin booking an appointment (Yelp, 2026). Quote requests cover more than 450 categories. Vagaro booking for beauty, wellness, and fitness and Zocdoc booking for doctors and dentists started on iOS, and Yelp said booking with service pros through Calendly would follow this summer (Yelp, 2026).

The assistant launched on iOS and Android and on eligible business pages, such as restaurants, retail shops, and attractions, with all business pages and desktop to follow later in the year (Yelp, 2026). On the business side, Yelp says pros on Calendly can share real-time availability on a quote request in a few taps, and the Yelp for Business inbox now labels where every lead stands (Yelp, 2026).

What it means for you: Yelp calls the assistant "an entirely new discovery channel" and notes customers can request quotes from several businesses at once (Yelp, 2026). Our read: when a customer can ask three pros for a quote in one conversation, the first clear reply with an open time has the edge. Yelp's own Morning Consult survey found nearly three in four people want real customer reviews when using AI search (Yelp, 2026), so your Google reviews and Yelp reviews both matter here.

New data: most home service inquiries never get a follow-up

On April 13, 2026, Pied Piper published its 2026 Lead Handling Effectiveness study of 31 large home services brands, based on 3,211 mystery inquiries by phone, chat, and web form between October 2025 and January 2026 (Pied Piper Management Company, 2026). The most common follow-up was none at all, 72% of the time (Pied Piper Management Company, 2026). When booking was the natural next step, customers were offered an appointment only 28% of the time (Pied Piper Management Company, 2026). And 42% of locations scored as ineffective, usually from unanswered phones, no follow-up, or little help (Pied Piper Management Company, 2026).

The study also tested AI. About one in ten customers met AI by chat or phone; 27% of those interactions were handled start to finish, and 73% needed a person (Pied Piper Management Company, 2026). A third of those handoffs failed (dropped calls, long holds, or voicemail) after the customer had already spent 93 seconds with the AI on average (Pied Piper Management Company, 2026).

What it means for you: these were locations of large brands, but the failure points are ones any business can check. Our read: the gap isn't AI versus people, it's whether every inquiry gets an answer, a time, a follow-up, and a working handoff to a person. Our guide to speed to lead covers why the first reply wins.

What to do this week

  1. If you run Google call ads, open Admin, then Account settings, then Call ads, and set call recording the way you want it (Google Ads Help, 2026). Tell your staff that ad calls may be recorded.
  2. Read a week of Call Details summaries and compare Google's call conversions to your own call log, so a drop in reported leads doesn't trigger a budget cut by mistake.
  3. Open Yelp for Business, answer every open quote request, and if you already book through Calendly, Vagaro, or Zocdoc, check whether customers can book you from your Yelp page.
  4. Mystery shop yourself: call, chat, and fill out your web form as a customer. Note whether anyone offered a time and followed up within 24 hours. Put your numbers into the lead velocity calculator.
  5. If AI answers your phone or chat, ask it for a person and time the handoff. If it ends in voicemail, fix that first. Our AI receptionist guide covers what to test.

Frequently asked questions

Is Google Ads recording my business's phone calls now?
It may be. Google says call recording is now on by default so its AI can judge which ad calls are real leads. It stays off if you turned it off before, or if Google identified your business as healthcare or financial services. It only covers calls through a Google forwarding number with both numbers in the US or Canada. You can switch it on or off under Call ads in your account settings.
Do I need to do anything about the new Yelp Assistant?
Keep your Yelp page complete and answer quote requests fast, because the assistant answers from reviews, photos, and business details and can start a quote request or booking for the customer. If you book through Calendly, Vagaro, or Zocdoc, check whether customers can book you from Yelp. Yelp says pros on Calendly can share real-time availability on a quote request in a few taps.
