AI for Service Businesses: What Changed in March 2026
Customers can now ask Google Maps and ChatGPT for a local pro in plain words. Here's what changed in March 2026 and what to fix this week.

The biggest March change for local businesses: Google Maps started answering questions in conversation. Google began rolling out Ask Maps in the U.S. on March 12, and its answers draw on more than 300 million places and reviews from over 500 million contributors (Google, 2026). A customer can now ask Maps for the business that fits their exact need, and Google says the reply draws on place information and reviews.
Google Maps now answers local questions in conversation
On March 12, Google introduced Ask Maps, a Gemini-powered conversational search inside Google Maps, rolling out in the U.S. and India on Android and iOS, with desktop coming soon (Google, 2026). Google says answers draw on information from over 300 million places, including reviews from more than 500 million contributors, are personalized to places a user has searched or saved, and can end in a restaurant reservation (Google, 2026).
What it means: customers can ask for specifics, like who is open tonight or who handles a certain job, instead of typing two keywords. Our read: the details in your Business Profile and the words customers use in your reviews now do more of the selling, because that is the material the answer comes from. Our guide to how customers use AI search covers what to fix first.
Apple announces a free business platform and ads in Apple Maps
On March 24, Apple announced Apple Business, a free platform it says will be available April 14, replacing Apple Business Connect, Apple Business Essentials, and Apple Business Manager (Apple Newsroom, 2026). Apple also said that starting this summer, businesses in the U.S. and Canada can create ads that appear in Maps search results and in a new Suggested Places feature, clearly marked as ads (Apple Newsroom, 2026). A business must first claim its location on Maps.
What it means: Apple Maps is getting a paid lane. The free part still matters most. Apple says place cards carry photos, hours, and custom actions like order or reserve, and owners get insights on searches, views, and taps (Apple Newsroom, 2026). If you have never claimed your Apple Maps listing, that is the first step either way.
Angi puts home service hiring inside ChatGPT
On March 4, Angi launched the Angi app in ChatGPT (Angi Inc. (GlobeNewswire), 2026). Homeowners can ask about a project, maintenance, or repair and get guidance plus local pro recommendations. When they click a pro or request a quote, they move to Angi, where its AI Helper turns their description into a service request (Angi Inc. (GlobeNewswire), 2026).
What it means for home service pros: a job can now start as a ChatGPT conversation and arrive as a quote request through Angi. Our read: it still lands like any other lead, so your response time is the part you control. Our speed to lead guide has the data on why minutes matter.
Nearly half of consumers now ask AI for local recommendations
BrightLocal published new Local Consumer Review Survey data on March 10: 45% of US consumers used an AI tool for local business recommendations in the past 12 months, up from 6% in 2025 (BrightLocal, 2026). ChatGPT led at 31%, followed by Google's AI Mode at 23%, while use of Google reviews slipped from 83% to 71% (BrightLocal, 2026). The survey covered 1,002 US adults.
What it means: AI is the starting point, not the final word. BrightLocal found 97% of AI users sometimes double-check AI recommendations against real reviews (BrightLocal, 2026). Our read: Google alone is no longer the whole picture, so keep your profiles current on the other sites your customers use. Our Google reviews guide covers how to ask for more.
The Fed: 46% of small employers use AI, mostly for writing
The Federal Reserve Banks' 2026 Report on Employer Firms, released March 3, found 46% of small employer firms use AI and another 15% plan to start within 12 months (Federal Reserve Banks, 2026). Writing or marketing was the top use (83%), and just 7% of AI users had fully integrated it. Among users, 71% reported higher productivity and 31% higher sales (Federal Reserve Banks, 2026). The fall 2025 survey drew 6,525 responses from a convenience sample of small employers.
What it means: reaching customers and growing sales was the most common operational challenge firms reported (Federal Reserve Banks, 2026), yet writing is where most AI use sits. Our read: the next step for most owners is pointing AI at the front door, meaning the calls, texts, and bookings where customers wait.
What to do this week
- Open Google Maps on your phone and, if Ask Maps has reached you, ask what a customer would ask, like "who can fix a leaking water heater today near me." Note who gets named and why.
- Update your Google Business Profile: hours, services, photos, and booking link. Then reply to your 10 most recent reviews. The reviews ROI calculator sizes what more reviews are worth.
- Claim or check your Apple Maps listing, in Apple Business Connect until April 14 and in Apple Business after that. Apple says ads on Maps will require a claimed location.
- If you take Angi leads, time how long a new quote request waits for a reply, and set a target your team can hit.
- Pick one customer-facing job for AI beyond writing, like answering missed calls. The missed call cost calculator prices what goes unanswered now.
Where Nirvani fits
Every change above ends with a customer reaching out. Nirvani captures incoming calls, texts, social messages, and website chat in one system. AI employees answer, qualify leads, book appointments into your calendar, follow up on no-shows, and send review requests, 24/7, in your business's voice. N1 is the entry operating system.
