AI for Service Businesses: What Changed in August 2026
Three August 2026 changes that touch how customers find, book, and reach a service business, what each one means, and what to do about it this week.
August's biggest change for home service owners came from Google, which told Local Services Ads advertisers that from October 1, a missed call during business hours will be charged as a lead if the caller stays on the line more than 20 seconds (Search Engine Roundtable, 2026). In the same month, ChatGPT users got table booking through Yelp (Yelp, 2026), and Gartner found 87% of customers want a way to reach a person when a company uses AI for service (Gartner, 2026).
Local Services Ads will charge for some missed calls
On August 25, Search Engine Roundtable reported an email Google sent Local Services Ads advertisers: starting October 1, 2026, "missed calls during business hours will now be charged as valid leads if a user stays on the line for more than 20 seconds, with a few exceptions" (Search Engine Roundtable, 2026). If your phone system makes callers press a key to be routed, the 20 seconds start at the key press, and a caller who never presses one isn't charged (Search Engine Roundtable, 2026). A follow-up call can also be charged when the first call didn't count, though Google's Ads Liaison said on August 26 that follow-up calls within 15 days of the first contact are charged only once (Search Engine Roundtable, 2026).
The same month was the scheduled start of a bigger move. Google's Ads Help page says existing Local Services Ads campaigns will be migrated automatically to a Performance Max campaign type built for pay-per-lead goals, with the first phase set for August 2026 for select US home and storefront service advertisers, including plumbing, HVAC, electrical, appliance repair, house cleaning, lawn care, roofing, pest control, and moving. Service-area businesses without storefronts follow in late 2026 (Google Ads Help, 2026).
Some things stay the same. You still pay only for valid leads such as calls and messages, and the ads still show only on Google Search and Maps (Google Ads Help, 2026). Others change: old performance reports don't carry over, manual bidding (a maximum cost per lead) is gone, weekly budgets become daily budgets, and your name and address now sync from your Google Business Profile (Google Ads Help, 2026). Your account admin gets an email 14 days before the switch (Google Ads Help, 2026).
Our read: a missed call with no message used to cost you the job. From October 1 it can cost you the lead fee too. Save your numbers before October 1 and before migration day, or you lose the baseline you need to judge your cost per lead under the new rules. The leads are still phone calls and messages, so how fast you respond still decides what each one is worth.
ChatGPT users can book restaurant tables through Yelp
On August 10, 2026, Yelp announced that ChatGPT users can book a table or join a waitlist at thousands of restaurants in the US and Canada without leaving the chat (Yelp, 2026). It runs on Yelp's reservation and waitlist tools and builds on an earlier deal that already shows Yelp reviews, ratings, photos, and business details inside ChatGPT (Yelp, 2026). Yelp says its content also feeds Apple Maps, Amazon's Alexa+, and Microsoft Bing (Yelp, 2026).
For a restaurant, a guest can now go from an AI recommendation to a confirmed table in one conversation. Our read: for any service business, your Yelp profile is now one of the sources AI assistants read, so it needs the same care as your Google profile. Customers want AI that gets things done, plus a way to reach a person
Gartner reported on August 4, 2026 that 87% of customers say companies using generative AI for service must offer a way to reach a human agent, while 50% say AI makes interactions easier (Gartner, 2026). The survey covered 3,566 B2B and B2C customers in February and March 2026. Of customers who use these tools, 58% have used AI to complete a task for them (Gartner, 2026).
Gartner lists booking an appointment among the actions customers now expect AI to handle, and warns that customers pushed through repeated failed AI attempts before reaching a person are less likely to use that tool again (Gartner, 2026). It also found customers were about three times more likely to use outside tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, or Copilot than a company's own chatbot in their most recent service interaction (Gartner, 2026). Our read: an AI phone or chat line should book, answer, and take details, with a clear path to a person. Our AI receptionist guide covers what to hand off.
What to do this week
- If you run Local Services Ads, screenshot or download your performance reports today, write down your weekly budget, leads, and cost per lead, and confirm the admin email on the account is one someone reads (Google Ads Help, 2026).
- Check that the hours on your Google Business Profile are hours someone can pick up the phone. From October 1, missed calls in business hours can be billed (Search Engine Roundtable, 2026), and your profile details sync into Google Ads after migration (Google Ads Help, 2026).
- Update your Yelp profile: hours, photos, services, and phone number. Restaurants on Yelp's reservation tools should ask ChatGPT for a table at their own place and check that the open times match.
- Call your business after hours and test what happens. Can a caller book, and can they reach a person? Price the calls that slip with the missed call cost calculator.
Where Nirvani fits
Leads from an ad, a listing, or an AI answer still arrive as calls, texts, and messages. Nirvani captures incoming calls, texts, social messages, and website chat in one system. AI employees answer, qualify leads, book appointments into your calendar, and follow up on no-shows, 24/7, in your business's voice, around the processes your team already uses. N1 is the entry operating system.
