AI for Service Businesses: The Week of October 12, 2026
Three changes from the past week that touch how customers find, call, and choose a service business, plus what to do about them before Friday.
The week's most useful update for anyone paying Google per lead: Google expanded its Local Services Ads help page to spell out when a missed call is billed, and a call that reaches voicemail can count (Google Local Services Help, 2026; Search Engine Roundtable, 2026). If you pay Google per lead, an unanswered call can show up on your bill.
Google spelled out when Local Services Ads bill a missed call
Search Engine Roundtable reported on October 8 that Google had expanded its "How leads work" page for Local Services Ads, calling the 20-second missed-call rule "the biggest change" (Search Engine Roundtable, 2026). The page lists a missed call during business hours, with the caller on the line more than 20 seconds, as a valid lead. A call that goes to voicemail or an automated greeting during business hours is treated as connected and charged after 20 seconds, message or not (Google Local Services Help, 2026). Google first told advertisers about missed-call charges in August, as our August brief covers.
"Business hours" means the hours set in your Google Business Profile (Google Local Services Help, 2026). If a phone menu asks the caller to press a key, the 20 seconds start at the key press, and a caller who hangs up without pressing one isn't charged (Google Local Services Help, 2026). Follow-up contact from the same number within 15 days isn't charged again, and Google reviews leads for 30 days and credits low-quality ones, except for US health care and tax businesses (Google Local Services Help, 2026). Our read: a missed call with no message used to cost you the job. On Local Services Ads it can now cost you the lead fee too. Our guide on what a missed call costs shows how fast that adds up.
ChatGPT brought GPT-6 to free users and will test a new ad format
OpenAI began rolling out GPT-6 with what it calls Intelligent UI to paid ChatGPT plans on October 7 and to Free and Go users the next day, after giving paid customers the first GPT-6 models in September (OpenAI, 2026). It says GPT-6 "improves the quality of answers that require web search" and that more than 1.2 billion people use ChatGPT every week (OpenAI, 2026). On October 5, OpenAI said it will start testing a new visual ad format in the US later this month, shown during image generation to Free and Go users, and repeated that "advertising does not influence the answers ChatGPT provides" (OpenAI, 2026).
Our read: an ad can sit next to ChatGPT's answer, but OpenAI says it doesn't change the answer. When a customer asks for a dentist or a roofer nearby, being named depends on what ChatGPT can find and confirm about you on the web. Our guide to how customers find businesses through AI search covers what to fix.
About one in four US businesses now use AI
Census Bureau data released October 8 shows 23.8% of US employer businesses used AI in some business function in the prior two weeks, and 27.7% expect to within six months (U.S. Census Bureau, 2026). That's the same share as the previous release on September 24, and up from 17.7% in the first release of 2026 (U.S. Census Bureau, 2026). The survey samples about 1.2 million businesses and represents all US employer businesses outside farming (U.S. Census Bureau, 2026).
Our read: that's a rise of about a third this year, and more than three in four businesses still didn't report using AI.
What to do this week
- If you run Local Services Ads, open the Leads page in Google Ads and count the missed calls marked "Charged" in the Charge Status column.
- Put that count into the missed call cost calculator to see what unanswered calls cost you in lead fees and lost jobs.
- Check that the hours in your Google Business Profile are hours someone can actually pick up. Missed calls inside those hours are the billable ones.
- Ask ChatGPT for your main service in your city and note whether you're named and whether what it says about you is right.
- Decide who answers when your team is on a job. Our AI receptionist guide walks through the options.
Where Nirvani fits
Nirvani's AI employees answer incoming calls, texts, social messages, and website chat 24/7, in your business's voice. They qualify the lead and book the appointment into your calendar. When a missed call can still cost you a lead fee, an answered call is the one that can turn into a booked job.
